Protests continue for third consecutive day in Syria’s Suwayda

SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday and for the third consecutive day, residents of Syria’s southern governorate of Suwayda have continued the anti-government protests on the back of the government decision to lift subsidy for thousands of families.

The protestors blocked the route links between Nimra village, in the eastern countryside, and the city to passersby allowing the passage of only students and emergencies, North Press correspondent reported.

The protestors distributed sweets to the passersby confirming that the protests they have been staging are peaceful, the correspondent said.

For the third consecutive day, people have been gathering in front of Ain al-Zaman shrine (Druze Council) in preparation to head to al-Karama Square in the city center in order to join protests there.

Since Thursday, the city of Suwayda have been experiencing protests by residents demanding the government to reverse its decision to lift the subsidy.

Yesterday, the oppositionist Syrian Council for Change (SCC) released a statement supporting the protests in Suwayda.
