US soldier died in Syria’s northeast

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Friday, The US Department of Defense announced a soldier, who was supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, died in the governorate of Hasakah, northeast Syria.

The 20-year-old Alex J. Ram, of California, died on February 1, at Tell Beydar in Syria.

He died “as a result of a non-combat related incident. The incident is under investigation,” according to a statement by the US Department of Defense.

The incident came in a time when the city of Hasakah northeast Syria is witnessing a security unrest following the attack by the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) sleeper cells on al-Sina’a prison, where thousands of ISIS inmates were detained, in an attempt to break their fellow inmates out from the prison.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) with the support of the US-led Global Coalition managed to regain control over the prison on  January 25.

About 900 US troops remain in Syria, working with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), said Defense Department spokesman Navy Cmdr. Jessica McNulty

In a previous exclusive statement to North Press, the spokesperson added that the US and the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS “remain committed to our presence in northeast Syria and our partnership with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS.”
