Residents of Syria’s Suwayda protest against government decision

SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, the Syrian southern city of Suwayda witnessed large-scale protests in rejection of a Syrian government decision to lift subsidy for a big segment of the population. 

Days ago, the Syrian government ruled out thousands of Syrian families from a subsidy program.

The decision ruled out about 596,628 families, who used to benefit from the ration card, around 15% of the families that were granted the government subsidy, but the numbers indicate to more than 21%.   

The residents of Salim town in northern countryside of Suwayda blocked the Damascus-Suwayda Highway with burning tires paralyzing the transport movement, North Press correspondent said.

Additionally, the residents closed the government institutions in several town in Suwayda northern countryside, the correspondent added.

Social media activists called for demonstrations and sit-ins next week to protest against the government’s decision.

For two days, several cities in the Syrian government-held areas have witnessed protests due to the government decision to lift subsidy from a large segment of the citizens.
