Syria’s’ attendance at Arab summit depends on Arab consensus, Aboul Gheit
ERBIL, KRG, Iraq (North Press) – The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said on Wednesday Damascus’ attendance at the upcoming Arab summit depends on Arab consensus.
“Until the summit’s convening and if consultations on a specific approach are made and an agreement is reached to talk to the government in Syria, and to respond to the proposed Arab positions, then nothing will curb it from returning,” Aboul Gheit said over Syria’s attendance at the Arab League summit.
Syria’s attendance in the Arab summit depends on a consensus among 21 Arab countries, in statements to Amman-based Jordanian public broadcaster Al-Mamlaka, Aboul Gheit said.
The Secretary-General revealed the next Arab summit, to be held in Algeria, will not be at the end of March as stipulated on the League’s charter.
The date will be postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic and the general Arab situation.
Aboul Gheit said Algeria demanded more consultations by the Arab foreign ministers to set a new date for the summit.
The new date for the summit will be determined during a meeting on March 9, according to Aboul Gheit.
