Child Protection Office in Syria’s Hasakah hands a minor to his family

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – The Child Protection Office handed a minor, who wanted to join military units few days ago, back to his family, Khaled Jabr, co-chair of the Child Protection Office in Armed Conflicts in Hasakah, northeast Syria, said on Wednesday.

“We are continuing to disengage the minors from the military formations, whenever they receive a complaint from their families, under the UN and international laws on keeping children away from military actions,” Jabr told to North Press.

He noted that they handed the 14-year-old Ali Najjar on Sunday to his family.

The Child Protection Office in northeast Syria revealed that 620 minors were disengaged from the military forces during 2021.

Children are motivated to contact and join ranks of the military formations due to the stress they face at homes and streets, Jabr added.

The Child Protection Office was founded in 2020 in all cities across northeast Syria. A step followed an agreement signed by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander-in-Chief Mazloum Abdi with the United Nations to prevent the recruitment of underage children or involve them in armed conflicts.

The SDF with authentication of AANES signed a joint work plan with the UN concerning the elimination of child recruitment

The SDF adheres to the commitment and prevent enlisting the children within ranks of the SDF, whereas the Child Protection Office in al-Hasaka disengaged two minors from Derik at the end of 2021.
