Swedish delegation visits northeast Syria, repatriates citizens

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A Swedish delegation arrived yesterday in northeast Syria and discussed the situation in the region plus repatriation of a number of Swedish citizens who were ISIS members.

Yesterday, a Swedish delegation, which included ambassador Frederic Florn, and his deputy, Mrs. Christine Hedenberg, visited Foreign Relations Office of North and East of Syria.

The delegation was welcomed by The vice-president of the AANES Department of Foreign Relations, Fanar al-Gait, member of the administrative board, Nafia Muhammad, the head of the Europe department in Department of Foreign Relations, Shewaz Khalil, and the head of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) office, Lana Hussein.

The current situation in northeast Syria plus the economic and humanitarian situation in general in the region were evaluated in the meeting.

Al-Gait spoke about the recent ISIS attack on al-Sina’a prison in Hasakah’s Guweiran neighborhood.

“The Autonomous Administration is facing the largest terrorist organization in the world alone, and the international community is still not doing its duty towards the issue of ISIS members and the camps that house ISIS families,” al-Gait added.

Furthermore, the international organizations operating in the area “did not fulfill their humanitarian duty towards the residents of Hasakah, but rather their work was limited to the Security Square [held by the Syrian government],” according to al-Gait.

He stressed the importance of supporting the Autonomous Administration areas politically and economically to improve the situation of camps and detention centers and to establish rehabilitation centers to curb terrorism and establish peace and stability.

“Turkey continues attacking many safe areas and committing violations daily in the occupied areas of Afrin, Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and Tel-Abyad,” he noted.

“The Turkish attacks are to destabilize the security and stability in the region and they are also an attempt to revive ISIS to reorganize its ranks,” he indicated.

Commenting on Hasakah’s attack, Ambassador Frederic Florn expressed his sadness about what happened.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the families of the martyrs, and we feel sorry for the civilians who were displaced from their homes due to the attack launched by ISIS in detention centers,” Florn said.

The Swedish ambassador stressed his country’s continued support for the Autonomous Administration, saying “and we appreciate the sacrifices they made here.”

A number of Swedish women and children of ISIS were handed over to the Swedish delegation, according to an official handover document between the Autonomous Administration and the Kingdom of Sweden.
