Government military operation launched in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor following ISIS reemergence

AL-MAYADIN, Syria (North press) – Following the rise of the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) in Deir ez-Zor desert, eastern Syria, auxiliary forces of the Syrian government forces started a military operation in the region on Tuesday.

ISIS, which vigorously acts in Deir ez-Zor desert, keeps on attacking the government forces through setting up ambushes, planting IEDs and landmines and launching hit-and-run attacks.

A local source told North Press that several military convoys of the National Defense Forces (NDF) and the Palestinian al-Quds Brigade drove out of al-Mayadin city to conduct a security sweep in al-Qoriya and al-Ashara, in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

“The security sweep followed a public emergence and activities by ISIS militants in the desert,” a source of the NDF told North Press.

ISIS takes al-Qoriya and al-Ashara as a strongholds to launch attacks against the Syrian government forces and its auxiliary forces, according to North Press sources.

The two aforementioned areas are near populated areas.

After the defeat of ISIS was declared in Baghouz town in March 2019, ISIS transformed to sleeper cells deploying in the desert and in separate areas in Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa, and Hasakah, and others.
