HRO in northeast Syria calls on UN to stop Turkish attacks on Kobani
KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, the Human Rights Organization in the Euphrates region addressed Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, through a statement read in English in front of the organization’s headquarters in the city of Kobani, north Syria, calling on him to intervene and stop the Turkish attacks on Kobani.
Sarah Qawwas, co-chair of the Human Rights Organization in the Euphrates region (an administrative division affiliated with the AANES and includes Kobani, Raqqa and Tel Abyad areas), said there is international silence towards the Turkish state’s indiscriminate attacks on civilians in northeast Syria.
On January 8, nine places in Kobani city and its countryside were hit with Turkish bombardment. The bombing resulted in the loss of a civilian’s life and the injury of 11 others, in addition to great material damage caused by the bombing.
The Human Rights Organization in the Euphrates region believes that the Turkish state’s attacks aim to create a state of panic and fear among civilians in order to displace them and change the demographic of the region, Qawwas told North Press.
Turkey, through attacking civilians, “violates all the international laws and norms, including the Geneva Convention and child protection laws,” she added.
