New Turkish observation post established in Syria’s Idlib

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – The Turkish forces completed the establishment of a military point overlooking the Aleppo-Damascus M5 Highway, near the city of Saraqib, which is under the control of the Syrian government forces, east of Idlib.

The establishment of the Turkish point coincides with a Russian and governmental military escalation in the Turkish-backed Syrian opposition factions held areas in northwestern Syria.

The Turkish army positioned its forces at a new point on the road between the opposition-controlled Afes town and Duwayr area near the government-held Saraqib city, military sources of the Syrian opposition told North Press.

The new point located near Aleppo-Damascus Highway and its almost complete detection, as the Turkish forces and the factions will be able with this step to monitor the movements of government forces on the Highway, the source added.

The Turkish forces reinforced the new point with four armored vehicles, in addition to about 50 Turkish soldiers, and more than 30 militants of the Turkish-backed National Front for Liberation factions, according to the sources.

Idlib located within the de-escalation zone, where Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed a ceasefire agreement in March 2020.

The agreement included several terms including the establishment of a 6-km-length safe corridor to the north and south of the M4 Highway, which constitutes a strategic point that crosses the Idlib region, and conducting joint patrols on it along Syria.
