Brussels and Washington warn of consequences of Russian buildup against Ukraine

ERBIL, KRG, Iraq (North Press) – The US and the European Union (EU) stressed any Russian aggressions against Ukraine will have massive consequences.

The US Department of State released a statement saying the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke on the phone with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.

Blinken reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening cooperation between the US and EU and addressing shared challenges, the statement said.

Moreover, Blinken underscored the importance of coordinating actions in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The EU External Action Service website released a statement saying Borrell and Blinken discussed the increase of Russian military buildup around Ukraine.

Borrell left his evaluation of the situation in Ukraine until he visited Ukraine, including the contact lines. Both Blinken and Borrell affirmed their support to Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, the statement said.

Both Blinken and Borrell emphasized the need for Russia to de-escalate and fully implement the Minsk agreements. “Any further military aggression against Ukraine will have massive  consequences and severe cost,” they said.

The tow discussed the proposals presented by the Russian Federation regarding Russia’s views about the possible security arrangements in Europe.

Also, the two underlined the US’s and the EU’s enduring partnership and shared commitments to Transatlantic security and to confronting common security challenges.

Geneva will host tomorrow a new session of the talks on strategic stability between Russia and the US.

On January12, 2022, a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council will take place at NATO Headquarters.
