Landmine explosion claims lives of 5, wounds 6 in Iraq

ERBIL, KRG, Iraq (North Press) – An unexploded remnant of war exploded in Basrah governorate, western Iraq, killing five persons and wounding six others.

“A landmine exploded when a car, carrying  a family, was driving in Rumaylah area, on Saturday evening,” a source in Basrah police station told North Press.

The landmine was an explosive remnant of war (ERW) planted during the war between Iran and Iraq in 1980s, the source said.

Basrah Police Station released a statement in which it said Major Ali Abdulhamid, head of the Station, checked the scene. The statement mentioned no formal statistic.

Bodies of the deceased were transferred to the Forensic Medicine and the injured persons were dispatched to hospital.

Tight security procedures were imposed near the scene and other visitors were denied access to the area.

The Iraqi Ministry of Interior has not commented on the incident so far.

Every year, dozens of residents and security personnel pass away due to explosions of ERW near Iraq-Iran since war between the two countries that lasted for eight years.
