People in Syria’s Afrin call to prosecute an opposition faction

ALEPPO NORTHERN COUNTRYSIDE, Syria (North Press) – The people ofJindires district in Afrin city, northern Syria, took to the streets demanding the trial of Muhammed al-Jassem, nicknamed Abu Amsha, leader of Sultan Suleiman Shah (al-Amshat) faction over charges of corruption and violations.

The protests coincided a march staged in Sheikh Hadid area, Afrin countryside, by Abu Amsha’s supporters and members of his faction chanting his name, an eyewitness told North Press.

Activists on social media condemned the protest in  support of Abu Amsha accusing it of conducting media deception and misleading work of the Rights Restitution Committee in the region.

In late 2021, al-Amshat leadership issued a decision announcing it fired two bothers of Abu Amsha from their positions after they were accused of committing violations once the faction controlled the region in 2018.

Before that, tensions in Sheikh Hadid area west of Afrin, rose given the Unified Leadership “Azm”, affiliated with Turkey, demanded the handover of Abu Amsha’s relatives, including his brother Basel al-Jassem, nicknamed Alamdar.

Abu Amsha is the most notable leaders of the Turkish-backed Syrian armed opposition factions. He controlled the whole of Sheikh Hadid district in 2018 and has committed since then widespread violations against the civilians in the region.

The city of Afrin and its villages, north of Aleppo, have been controlled by Turkish forces and the affiliated factions since March 2018.
