From the sea, Israel shells Syrian port in Latakia

LATAKIA, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, Israeli warplanes launched an airstrike targeting the Syrian coast in Latakia.

SANA, Syria’s state-run news agency quoted a military source as saying “at about 03:21 a.m. on Tuesday, a wave of missiles from the depth of the Mediterranean Sea, west of Latakia, targeted the container yard at the commercial port in Latakia.”

The port has been targeted twice this month by Israel as the first strike was on December 7.

Concerning the first strike, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said they targeted an Iranian weapons cargo which contained air defense systems.

“The new Israeli airstrike caused the outbreak of fires in the scene and significant material damages, Work is underway to put out the fires and assess the results of the aggression,” SANA added.

Sounds of consecutive explosions heard in the scene according to video footages went viral on local media websites.

Over the past years, Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes on Syria targeting sites of factions loyal to Iran most notably the Lebanese Hezbollah.

Israel rarely acknowledges carrying out any airstrikes in Syria. However, in a yearly report released in 2020, the IDF stated they targeted around 50 points in Syria. The report gave no further details.
