Lavrov and Mekdad discuss settlement in Syria in telephone conversation
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – In a telephone conversation on Monday, the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov discussed the need to move forward in settling the Syrian war with the Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal Mekqdad, Moscow announced.
Lavrov and Mekdad discussed in the call, which was “at the request” of the Syrian minister, “developments of the situation in Syria and focused on the need to move forward in a comprehensive political settlement,” Russian RT TV channel reported the Russian Foreign Ministry’ statement.
“The call touched on the outcomes of the 17th round of Astana peace talks which was held on December 22 in the city of Nur-Sultan, as well as issues of the 7th session of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, which is scheduled to be held in January 2022,” the statement said.
“The Russian side stressed the importance of continuing the fruitful work on preparing constitutional reform within the framework of this Syrian forum,” the statement added.
The statement reported Lavrov, saying: “Russia is committed to continuing efforts to achieve the goals stipulated in the UN Resolution 2254, including ensuring the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of the Syrian Arab Republic.”
“Lavrov and Mekdad exchanged their views in detail on the progress of the implementation of the UN Resolution 2585 on the extension of the cross-border mechanism for the transfer of humanitarian aid to Syria,” the statement noted.
A number of issues of Russian-Syrian cooperation, including the prepared visit of Mekdad to Moscow was discussed by the two ministers.
