6,000 flight canceled in Christmas due to Omicron
ERBIL, KRG, Iraq (North Press) – More than 6,000 flights have been cancelled worldwide over the Christmas holiday and thousands more were delayed, according to FlightAware tracking website.
It came at a time when an outbreak of Omicron causing travel disruptions and affecting millions of travelers around the world.
The tracking website reported on Sunday, as the highly infectious Omicron variant brings holiday hurt to millions.
According to Flightaware, more than 2,800 flights were canceled yesterday, including more than 970 originating from, or headed to, US airports.
It is expected that the number of delayed flights will rise to 8,000 until the morning hours.
On December 24, about 2,400 flights were canceled, while it was announced that about 11,000 flights were delayed, and the site recorded the cancellation of more than 900 flights scheduled for Sunday.
The cancellations have exacerbated the frustration associated with the pandemic for thousands of people who had been hoping to meet family members after travel and Christmas celebrations were drastically curtailed last year.
The largest number of flight cancellation decisions was announced among Chinese airlines, as China Eastern announced the cancellation of about 1,000 flights (more than 20% of its scheduled flights), while “Air China” suspended about 20% of its scheduled flights during this period.
