Turkish Lira drop sparks protests by teachers in Syrian opposition areas
ALEPPO NORTHERN COUNTRYSIDE, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, teachers protested in the city of al-Bab, northern Syria, demanding an improvement in their conditions and rise in their salaries, following the collapse and instability of the Turkish lira exchange rate.
School teachers in the city raised slogans calling for improving the educational process and rising teachers’ salaries in proportion to the rapid collapse of the Turkish lira, an exclusive source told North Press.
The protests come after partial strikes that included all schools in the city and its countryside, and the suspension of school hours for two days a week, threatening to increase the strike days if the teachers’ full demands are not met.
The lira plunged to 15.60 against the dollar in the hours after the rate cut down 5 percent in the day.
Turkey has been supervising the educational process in the areas controlled by the affiliated opposition factions since the Euphrates Shield operation in 2017 in Aleppo northeastern countryside.
Since 2017, the city of al-Bab in the eastern countryside of Aleppo has been under the control of Turkish-backed opposition factions.
