ISIS remains active in Syria, Coalition officer

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – ISIS remains active in Syria as an existential threat if they are allowed to regenerate, the spokesman of the Public Affairs of CJTF-OIR, Col, Joel Harper, told North Press on Sunday.

Yesterday, Saturday, ISIS claimed the latest attack that targeted the military headquarters of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)in the town of eastern Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.

“We will continue our partnership with the SDF. We will continue to target Daesh in Syria so it can never again threaten the region,” Harper said in a written statement to North Press.

In early November, the SDF Special Units and Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria (Asayish), with the participation of the US-led Global Coalition forces, arrested 57 members and leaders of ISIS sleeper cells active in northeastern Syria.

The statements of the coalition spokesman came after Iraq announced, on December 9, “the end of the combat missions of the coalition forces and their official withdrawal from Iraq.”

The Coalition officer said “The mission has not ended. The recent announcement by the Government of Iraq confirmed that all tactical combat forces have left Iraq, in accordance with the agreement between President Joe Biden and Iraq Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi.”

“The Coalition has been invited to remain in Iraq in a new role: to advice, assist, and enable our partners,” he added.
