QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – In another step suggesting an attempt at Arab normalization with Damascus, the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) unanimously agreed, during a virtual meeting on Thursday, that Syria would host the Arab Energy Conference in 2024.
Recently, some Arab countries have taken limited moves to improve relations with Syria.
Several Arab embassies were also reopened in Damascus and some Arab officials visited Damascus and some commercial ties were restored with the war-torn country.
“The Syrian Ministers of Energy and Petroleum, including Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Bassam Tohme, agreed that Syria would head the Council of Ministers of OAPEC as of January 2022 until January 2023,” the pro-government news agency SANSA reported.
OAPEC was founded in Beirut in 1968 with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Libya as its first members. Its headquarters are in Kuwait. Algeria, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain joined three years later.
