QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, the EU Humanitarian Aid (ECHO) donated €2 millionto the United Nations Children’s Funds’ (UNICEF) to support the vulnerable children in Syria, UNICEF said in a report released today.
The UNICEF’s office in Syria was established in 1970 to help the Syrian government fulfill its obligation to empower children to claim their rights under the Convention on the rights of the Child.
The ECHO has contributed more than €55 million since 2016 to UNICEF, the report said.
“Many of the children we are helping in Syria through UNICEF have known nothing but war and displacement,” EU Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič said.
“IN 2021, UNICEF requires $334,430,070 to provide lifesaving assistance to 9.1 million people, including 5.5 million children across Syria,” Humanitarian Action for Children said.
“UNICEF thanks the European Union for its generous contribution, which will enable UNICEF to reach more than 126,000 children and their caregivers in Syria with essential services,” Bo Victor Nylund, UNICEF Representative in Syria, tweeted.
