Government’s shelling damage houses in Syria’s Idlib

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, about 20 houses were damaged in a bombardment by Syrian government forces on villages and towns in Zawiya Mountain, south of Idlib, northwest Syria. The Turkish-backed armed opposition factions, in turn, targeted positions of the government forces in the same area.

The government forces bombed the villages and towns of Fatterah, Kafr Oweid, Sfuhen, Kansafra, Fleifel, Deir Sunbul, Maarbalit, Ma’rzaf, and the outskirts of Jabal al-Arba’in in Idlib governorate, North Press reported military sources.

About 20 houses were damaged in the bombing, which coincided with intense flight of Russian drones over the region, the source said.

Ansar al-Tawhid faction, one of the extremist factions affiliated with al-Qaeda, announced the killing and wounding of members of the government forces as a result of bombing their positions near Dara al-Kabira in the southern countryside of Idlib.

North Press, however, was unable to confirm the information through other sources.

Milaja and Dar al-Kabira areas witnessed sporadic clashes and mutual shelling between the opposition factions and the government forces. No casualties were reported.

For months, areas in Syria’s northwest have been witnessing mutual shelling between parties to the conflict in different areas amid news on government military reinforcements to different areas in the region.

Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.
