Government forces, opposition factions exchange shelling in Syria’s northwest

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Friday, the de-escalation zone in northwestern Syria witnessed a continuation of mutual shelling between Syrian government forces and Turkish-backed armed opposition factions.

The government forces bombed the sites of the opposition factions in the villages and towns of Fatterah, Kafr Oweid, Ma’ar Bilit, Kansafra, Banin and Majdaliya in the Zawiya Mountain area, south of Idlib, with missiles and heavy artillery shells, opposition military sources told North Press.

The sources added that the bombing resulted in the injury of several people, who were taken to medical points near the area, in addition to material damage.

In Hama and Aleppo, the government forces bombed the opposition sites in the villages of Sirmaniyah and Duwayr al-Akrad in the Ghab Plain, west of Hama, and similar shelling targeted the vicinity of the town of Atarib, west of Aleppo, with heavy artillery shells, according to the same sources.

For their part, the opposition factions announced that it targeted the government forces’ sites in Jurin Camp and Na’our in the Ghab Plain, west of Hama, and the Regiment 46, west of Aleppo.

For months, areas in Syria’s northwest have been witnessing mutual shelling between parties to the conflict in different areas amid news on government military reinforcements to different areas in the region.

Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.
