Shops’ fares soar in north Syria’s Afrin due to Turkish Lira drop

ALEPPO NORTHERN COUNTRYSIDE, Syria (North Press) – The economic office of the Ahrar al-Sharqiya faction, the most prominent Turkish-backed armed faction, raised, on Wednesday, the shops’ fare Afrin region, north Syria, to double due to the deterioration of the Turkish lira.

According to Lira website, Turkish lira dropped to 13.43 against the USD, while one TRY equals 266 Syrian Pounds (SYP).

A local source told North Press that the economic office of the faction doubled the fare of the shops in Rajo district in Afrin countryside, due to the significant decline in the value of the Turkish lira.

The source added that the fare of shops varies according to location and area, as it reaches 1,200 Turkish liras in some shops, equivalent to (340,000 SYP), after it was 750 Turkish liras before the new decision.

The decision was met with resentment by the residents due to the poor economic situation and the inability to pay money to the faction, according to the source.

The city of Afrin and its villages, north Syria, have been controlled by Turkish forces and the affiliated factions since March 2018.

At that time, the Turkish operation caused the displacement of more than 300,000 people, according to a report published by the Human Rights Organization-Afrin in January 2020.

Ahrar al-Sharqiya is considered one of the largest military formations backed by Turkey, and has a long record of war crimes, especially in Afrin, Tel Abyad and Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain), according to reports.
