RAQQA, Syria (north Press) – Officials of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) and the Education Board, in addition to those interested in the education sector and university students, celebrated the opening of the first university in Raqqa, north Syria, on Saturday.
It should be mentioned that al-Sharq University in Raqqa is new, and it is the fourth one in the areas run by the AANES.
Today, the university was officially opened for students in its headquarters (formerly the Faculty of Science building) in al-Mashlab neighborhood on the eastern side of the city.
On the sidelines of the opening ceremony, Issa al-Abdullah, the university’s vice president for administrative affairs, said the turnout of students to apply for the university was somehow good.
At the end of July, students who obtained high school and industrial certificates submitted their papers to register for admission to the university.
“About 210 students out of 600 who applied for the university were accepted,” al-Abdullah told North Press.
The reason for not accepting the rest of the students is due to the failure to meet the criteria set by the university (required marks and not to pass the entrance exam), according to al-Abdullah.
“The university has two faculties and two institutes, the Faculty of Arts, includes the Arabic language and the Faculty of Social Sciences includes mathematics, physics, chemistry and Biology, in addition to the Faculty of Education, which includes Class Teacher,” al-Abdullah added.
In the areas run by Autonomous Administration, there are Rojava University in the city of Qamishli, Kobani University in Kobani city, and Afrin University, where studies were suspended after the Turkish-backed Syrian opposition factions took control of the Afrin region in late 2018.
