Mazloum Abdi calls international community to pressure Turkey for return to negotiation table

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander-in-Chief, Mazloum Abdi, called on the international community to pressure Turkey in order to announce a ceasefire, end escalation, and return to the negotiation table to solve the Kurdish issue.

“If the international community pressures Turkey to announce a ceasefire, seek de-escalation, and start a peaceful process again, to go back to the negotiating table again and start a dialogue with the Kurds to resolve their problems in Turkey, I think this is one of the options available for the resolution of Turkey’s Kurdish question,” Mazloum Abdi said.

In an interview with National Interest, Abdi mentioned that when the Kurds in Turkey and the Turkish state were engaged in a peace process and a ceasefire, from 2013 to 2016, “we, the Kurds of Syria, also had good relations with Turkey. Our politicians used to visit Turkey and meet with their officials.”

“We think only the United States can resolve this problem, for some of the reasons the United States works with them, and with us,” the SDF Commander-in-Chief added.

He pointed out that the United States should “encourage the resumption of Turkey-PKK peace talks, which hold the best possibility of leading to a détente between Turkey and the SDF.”
