Russia, Iran discuss situation in Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Russian Presidential Special Envoy for Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Vershinin, met with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in Teheran to discuss the situation in Syria, the press service of the Iranian foreign ministry said on Sunday.

“After a visit to Damascus, Lavrentiev and Vershinin arrived in Teheran, where they met with the Iranian Foreign Minister,” it said, adding that the Russian delegation held talks on the bilateral relations and regional cooperation, including on Syria.

During the meeting, the Iranian Foreign Minister reiterated the Iranian government’s serious attention to relations between the two countries in various fields.

The minister considered that the exchange of high-level delegations between the two countries, as well as the recent phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Ibrahim Raisi, “reveal the two countries’ determination to develop “stable and long-lasting cooperation.”

Amir-Abdollahian characterized cooperation between the two countries in Syria as an absolutely successful experience that has been formed within the framework of the will of the Syrian government.

The Iranian Foreign Minister also stressed the need to use the successful experience of the joint cooperation between the two countries in the fight against terrorism in Syria and use this model for close cooperation in the economic sphere.
