Somali delegation visits AANES-held areas in northeast Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, Chargé d’Affairs of the Somali Embassy in Damascus and Natasha Stojkovska, head of the UNICEF office in NE Syria, visited the Autonomous Administration of North East Syria (AANES) areas.

The co-chair of the AANES Department of Foreign Relations, Abdulkarim Omar, and other officials, received the delegation at the headquarters of the Department in Qamishli city.

The Department of Foreign Relations said the two sides discussed many political and economic issues, especially the dialogue with the Syrian government, the political process and the Turkish threats to the region.

Omar stressed that the AANES is serious about any dialogue, as it is trying to open channels of dialogue with Damascus, and in constant communication with the Russians to play the role of guarantor in the dialogue.

Omar referred to the challenges facing the AANES, including confronting terrorism and economic challenges, especially after the closure of the Tel Kocher (al-Ya’roubiyah) crossing and the spread of COVID-19.

He also stressed a crisis that the region will face in the near future, which is a shortage of wheat.

In addition, the Somali ambassador said “We believe that the basic solution to the Syrian crisis can begin when the brotherly Arab countries and all Syrian parties begin to assume their responsibilities towards Syria.”

The ambassador expressed his thanks and gratitude to the Autonomous Administration for preserving the lives of Somali nationals and their human rights and caring for them in the camps and detention centers.
