Syrian government raises fuel prices again

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, Syrian government raised the prices of unsubsidized fuel. The price of unsubsidized gasoline reached as twice as the subsidized material.

The government has taken another step towards price liberalization, although it stressed that the subsidized materials will not be affected by the new prices.

In its new decision, the Ministry of Internal Trade and Consumer protection set the price of a liter of unsubsidized gasoline at 2,500 Syrian pounds (SYP), while the price of a subsidized liter does not exceed 750 SYP.

It also set the price of a liter of heating diesel at 1,700 SYP, provided that the quantity purchased does not exceed 40 liters.

The decision comes in light of a great shortage and severe rationing of gasoline and the almost absence of diesel, and oil derivatives in general. Most families in Syria did not receive any liter of fuel last year, while car owners only get 25 liters a week.

The lack of allocations almost paralyzes the transportation especially when moving outside Damascus, as the purchase of 20 liters of the unsubsidized gasoline could reach 100,000 SYP.
