Astana guarantor’s foreign ministers to meet in late 2021

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, Mukhtar Tileuberdi, said his country is considering the possibility of holding a meeting of foreign ministers of the guarantor states of the Astana peace process to discuss the crisis in Syria.

He added that there is a possibility to hold such a meeting between Russia, Turkey and Iran during the negotiations on the Syrian crisis in mid-December.

“The possibility of holding a meeting of the foreign ministers of the guarantor countries is being considered, in the framework of the next meeting of the Astana process,” Tileuberdi indicated.

A week ago, the Kazakh minister stressed that the Astana meeting would be held in the city of Nur-Sultan, the capital of Kazakhstan, in mid-December.

“We maintain close contacts with Kurdish representatives and are ready to do our best so that their legal interests are taken into account when forming new political frames in the context of the Constitutional Committee’s activities,” Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov, said yesterday.

On July 7 and  8, the sixteenth international meeting of the Astana negotiations on Syria was held in the Kazakh city of Nur-Sultan, with the participation of delegations from the guarantor countries, the Syrian government and the armed opposition.

The participants discussed the situation in Syria, international humanitarian aid and the possibilities of resuming the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee in Geneva.

The Astana Talks that aimed to end the Syrian conflict, initiated its first peace talks in January 2017 and held the 16th talks in July 2021.
