Qaani on unannounced visit to Baghdad
ERBIL, KRG, Iraq (North Press) – The commander of the Quds Force in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Esmail Qaani, arrived yesterday, in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on an unannounced visit against the backdrop of the assassination attempt on Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi two days ago.
Iraqi media outlets said Qaani met quickly with the leaders of the Shiite factions and informed them of his rejection of the attempt to assassinate the Iraqi Prime Minister.
The outlets indicated that tension prevailed in the atmosphere of the meeting. Qaani contented himself with his refusal to escalate the factions against the Iraqi government. He called on them to accept the election results.
After the meeting, the Iranian official went to meet al-Kadhimi, and informed him of his rejection of the assassination attempt and his unawareness of it and his willingness to assist in the investigations.
On Monday, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced an agreement with Iraq to help reveal those involved in the assassination attempt.
Reports indicate that Iranian-backed factions orchestrated the assassination attempt, but official statements have not yet revealed who carried out the operation.
