Future Syria Party in Raqqa demands accountability for Hevrin Khalaf’s killers
RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, politicians in the city of Raqqa, northern Syria, called for holding the people who assassinated Hevrin Khalaf, the Secretary-General of the Future Syria Party, accountable for their crime.
On Tuesday, politicians and residents of northeastern Syria recalled the second anniversary of the assassination of Hevrin Khalaf on October 9, 2019.
Khalaf occupied several political positions, the most recent of which was the Secretary-General of the Future Syria Party, an independent mass party that seeks to bring about a democratic transformation in Syria.
Investigations and human rights reports revealed the responsibility of the Ahrar al-Sharqiya, one of the Turkish-backed opposition factions, for the assassination of Khalaf and her companions on M4 Highway in October, 2019.
“Putting Ahrar al-Sharqiya faction on the US sanctions list is not enough, while the faction is still committing violations in the areas where it is present,” Zalikha Abdi, deputy head of the Raqqa Council for the Future Syria Party, said.
In July, the US Department of the Treasury announced a new package of sanctions targeting entities affiliated with the Syrian intelligence services and a Turkish-backed armed opposition faction.
The sanctions included Ahmad Ihsan Fayyad al-Hayes and Raed Jassem al-Hayes, who are leaders of the Turkish-backed Ahrar al-Sharqiya faction.
Ahrar al-Sharqiya faction, which is close to Turkey, is one of the largest armed factions and the most perpetrators of crimes. It operates in Turkey-held areas in northeast and northwest Syria.
Abdi considered that Hevrin khalaf’s killing is one of the chapters of the crimes committed against the Syrians, committed by Turkish-backed armed opposition factions in northern Syria.
