Labor Union in Syria’s Raqqa warns against catastrophic conditions
RAQQA, SYRIA (North Press) – On Monday, Labor Union in the city of Raqqa, northern Syria, warned of catastrophic conditions that the workers and those with limited incomes are witnessing in the city and its villages.
Families headed by workers or those with limited incomes secure only their basic needs and daily requirements, co-chair of Labor Union in Raqqa, Roudin Muhammad, said.
The Labor Union, which is one of the civil society organization, links between institutions and rules of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) on one hand, and social classes and the economic events on the other.
The Labor Union identifies itself as “a human right party to defend labor’s rights and follows up on their issues in the city and its villages.”
“Drought that Syria’s northeast has witnessed during the past months contributed to the lack of job opportunities in light of having most of the workers depending on work in the cultivation field,” Muhammad told North Press.
Meanwhile, the Labor Union grants those registered in it “membership cards,” according to which they get reductions in prices of medicines from “Labor Pharmacy” in addition to discounts on consultations of doctors contracted with the Union.
So far, the Raqqa Labor Union has granted membership cards to about 10,600 workers.
“As prices increase, families have been forced to adopt detrimental measures to cope. A recent survey completed by the World Food Program (WFP) reveals that some families are cutting down from three meals per day to two, there is an increase in the number of people purchasing food on credit and families are selling assets and livestock to generate additional income,” World Food Program (WFP), which is affiliated with the UN, said on its official twitter account, early in July.
International reports indicated that more than 90% of Syrians are under poverty line after a decade of war and crisis.
