Government forces remove checkpoints in Syria’s Daraa countryside

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Over the past two days, Syrian government forces removed a number of their military checkpoints north of Daraa, southern Syria.

On Friday, in the presence of Russian Military Police (MP), the government forces removed the checkpoint of the Qita village, south of the town of al-Sanamain in the northern countryside of Daraa, local sources said. 

Also, they removed the checkpoints of the market and the Charitable Association in the center of al-Sanamain.

Yesterday on Thursday, the government forces removed two checkpoints belonging to the Military Security Branch near the town of Jabab, north of Daraa, the sources added.

Additionally, the checkpoint of al-Karton between al-Sanamain and Jabab, and that of al-Hammamat between Jabab and the Damascus-Daraa Highway, were removed, too.  

The number of settlement agreements in Daraa governorate since the beginning of September has reached 12, which included the neighborhoods of Daraa al-Balad region, and the towns of al-Yadoudah, al-Muzairib, Tafas, Tel Shihab, Da’el, Ibta’, Nawa, Jassem, and the villages of the Yarmouk Basin. 

On September 5, a number of Daraa’s notables and government forces, in the presence of a number of Russian officers, reached a ceasefire agreement, including handing over weapons and deploying governmental security points in the towns of Daraa governorate.  

Daraa was subjected to a suffocating siege imposed by Iranian-backed factions and the government forces for more than two months. Finally, an agreement was reached between the parties to the conflict brokered by Russia on a ceasefire and the entry of government forces into the besieged neighborhoods.
