Interpol rejoins Syrian government to its communications network

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Yesterday on Thursday, the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) decided to rejoin Syrian government into its communications network.

The Interpol had suspended Syria’s membership in 2012 in the context of international sanctions against the “Assad government”.

The decision gives Syrian government new powers to pursue refugees and dissidents living outside the country.

Experts and activists fear that the decision may expose people who fled the war to detention and extradition.

The 194 member states of Interpol can ask the organization to issue “red notices” for wanted individuals, which function as a request to other member governments to arrest individuals who may then be subject to further action such as extradition.
