Following settlements, government forces enter Syria’s Daraa countryside
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, groups of government forces entered residential neighborhoods in the city of Nawa in the western countryside of Daraa, southern Syria.
The Syrian government forces, accompanied by the Russian Military Police (MP) and the city’s notables, entered the residential neighborhoods in implementation of the settlement agreement concluded between the city’s notables and government forces brokered by Russia, local sources told North Press.
On September 30, a meeting was held in the city between the Central Committee and the city’s dignitaries to reach an agreement.
The two parties agreed that the government forces would enter the city of Nawa and hand over a number of light weapons, and on the next day the settlement process started to be carried out.
Today, North Press reporter said that an agreement was signed in the morning between the Syrian government and dignitaries of the city of Nawa, which stipulates the entry of government forces into the city and the settlement of the conditions of the wanted persons.
Reports indicated that the number of those whose status was settled was 291 civilians and 51 military personnel.
The city of Nawa is the largest population center in the countryside of Daraa and was a headquarter of the interim government of the Syrian opposition which ran southern Syria before the summer of 2018.
The government forces entered the cities and towns of al-Yadoda, Muzayrib, Tafas, Tell Shihab, Sahem Golan, al-Shajara, Da’el, Tasil and others in the western countryside of Daraa.
These steps come as a continuation of the agreement held in early September between the Central Committee and the government forces brokered by Russia.
Daraa was subjected to a suffocating siege imposed by pro-Iranian factions and the government forces for more than two months. Finally, an agreement was reached between the parties to the conflict under Russian auspices on a ceasefire and the entry of government forces into the besieged neighborhoods.
