Russian jet targets opposition’s position in Syria’s northwest
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Friday, Russian warplanes bombed opposition factions’ sites in Idlib countryside, northwest Syria.
“The Russian warplanes targeted the towns of al-Ghaniya and al-Ghassaniyah in the Jisr al-Shughur area in the western Idlib countryside with several air raids and high-explosive vacuum missiles,” opposition military sources told North Press.
The sources added that the bombing affected the surrounding forests and western agricultural lands in the targeted areas, which caused the uprooting of some trees and partially damaged surrounding houses.
Meanwhile, the Syrian government forces, stationed in Jurin Camp, bombarded positions of the opposition factions in the towns of al-Sarmaniyah and al-Ziyara in the Ghab Plain area in the western countryside of Hama, with mortars and heavy artillery shells, according to the same sources.
The bombing coincided with an intense flight of Russian drones over the area.
The sources indicated that the opposition factions targeted the positions of the government forces in the village of Ma’arat Mukhas, south of Idlib, and government military positions in the towns of Miznaz and Urum al-Kubra, west of Aleppo, with heavy artillery shells.
The Idlib region is witnessing a military escalation despite the entry into force of the ceasefire agreement signed between Russia and Turkey in March 2020.
During the past few days, Turkish and Russian media have been circulating news of an upcoming meeting between the Turkish and Russian presidents, with Idlib as one of its main issues.
