Russia greatly affects dialogue with Damascus: NE Syria’s SDC

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – “The Russians are key players in the Syrian issue and have a great influence on the Syrian regime’s dialogue with the SDC,” Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) co-chair Amina Omar said on Wednesday.

In mid-September, a delegation of the SDC and the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) visited the Russian capital Moscow following Syrian President Bashar Assad’s unannounced visit to Moscow to meet his Russian counterpart President Vladimir Putin.

“The Russians can play a major role in developing the dialogue between the SDC and the regime if they want to, provided that they act as real guarantors of this dialogue and its results,” Omar added.

She explained that “any talk or agreement with the government would take into account the situation of residents in northeast Syria and ensure their interests without prejudice to any of their rights.”

She said that among the priorities of the SDC’s foreign visits is focusing on the continuation of the Turkish attacks on northeast Syria and the need of the international community to adopt a clear position regarding this issue.

On September 20, a delegation of the AANES arrived in US capital Washington in conjunction with the onset of the works of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.

Omar believes that the participation of the SDC and the AANES in all stages of the political process is “necessary.”

The SDC official pointed out that the officials in northeast Syria are well aware of “the residents’ fear of the return of the Syrian regime and its security apparatus to the region.”
