Upcoming Russian-Turkish-Iranian meeting on Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Turkish president will meet the Russian president in Russia on the 29th of September, and Bloomberg Agency said that Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi will be present at the meeting.

The agency stated that during his visit to Russia, President Erdogan is expected to raise the issue of the escalation in Idlib by Russia and the forces of the Damascus government.

According to what Bloomberg published, Wednesday, Turkey has sent more troops to northwestern Syria to carry on blocking an assault on one of the Syrian war’s last front lines in Idlib, and control the roads leading to the Turkish border.

During an inspection tour of the Turkish-Syrian border, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said, “We abide by our agreements with Russia, and we expect our interlocutors also to abide by these agreements.”

In March 2020, the Russian and Turkish parties reached a Moscow agreement in March of 2020. The agreement stipulated a ceasefire, the establishment of a safe corridor, and the conduct of joint patrols on the M4 Highway.

“This is important to prevent a new wave of immigration in any way,” Akar stressed.

Erdogan said, in a speech last Tuesday to the United Nations General Assembly, that his country would not carry the burden of a new wave of migration amid an increase in the number of refugees fleeing the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.

The Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Miqdad said that his country’s authorities are calling on Turkey to immediately withdraw its forces from the territory of the northern Syrian governorates.

“I believe that the Turkish forces should withdraw immediately. The international community, in turn, should support Syria’s efforts to liberate the lands Turkey occupied in the north of the country,” he added in an interview with the Russian Novosti agency.

Miqdad indicated that the main reason for the escalation in Idlib is the Turkish occupation and the support that Ankara provides to terrorist groups on the ground.
