Source in Syria’s Daraa denies reaching agreement with government
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – On Friday, a source from Inkhi, in the southern countryside of Daraa, south Syria, denied any settlement agreement with Syrian government forces similar to those made recently in Daraa and its villages.
Earlier on Friday, residents and notables of Inkhil attended a meeting that government officials and officers called for in al-Bassam Mosque in the city.
Member of People’s Assembly Farouq al-Hammadi and head of the municipal council Yasin al-Zamal called for the meeting which was also attended by the officer in charge of the government’s state security branch in the city, a source that attended the meeting told North Press under the condition of anonymity.
The member of People’s Assembly demanded that residents hand over weapons “most likely for him to obtain the government forces’ satisfaction,” according to him.
Inkhil city is not included in the area of settlements including Daraa, Muzayrib, and Tafas, where government demand that their residents hand over their weapons, the source added.
The source stressed that no meeting was held with the government security committee in the city, and “it is possible that settlements for wanted individuals by the government will be proposed later, but so far there have been no names.”
The same source believes that today’s meeting was held only for the purpose of appeasing “the Ba’ath Party group.”
During the meeting, one of the residents asked about the fate of detainees by the government in the event that they have settlements, and “he was silenced by those who called for the meeting, saying that the meeting is held to discuss only service issues,” he pointed out.
In contrast to other cities and towns in the countryside of Daraa, the city of Inkhil is devoid of military checkpoints, except for a center for the State Security Branch of the government forces.
