Wheat crop of 2021 is least productive in three years: Syria’s AANES

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – Wheat crop of this year was the least productive compared to the past three years, an official of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) said on Sunday.

The AANES issued several decisions during the wheat harvest this year, in an attempt to improve it which did not seem good since the beginning of the harvesting, according to statements of AANES officials.

The co-chair of the Economic and Agriculture Board, Salman Barudo said that the AAENS received 183,000 tons of wheat this year. This amount is much smaller than what northeast Syria needs.

“There are many factors that contributed to reducing the productivity of the wheat of this year, including; the lack of rainfalls in the region, the lack of irrigated fields due to the decrease of the Euphrates River level and the damage to irrigation projects,” Barudo added.

“The AANES pays greater attention to wheat because it is the most important material in achieving food security for the people of the AANES-held area,” he referred.

The AANES will take measures to avoid the shortage of wheat stocks especially by securing flour for the residents and the seeds for the farmers.

“Setting prices of wheat seeds at 1,200 Syrian pound (SYP) (about 40 US cents) and distributing it early this year is “a step aimed at encouraging the farmers to plant wheat next year to overcome the shortage that occurred during this year,” according to Barudo.
