HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, an unidentified armed group stole quantities of gold, money, and cellphones from Hawl Camp, northeast Syria.
Hawl Camp, which is the biggest camp in northeastern Syria, houses 16,000 families, including 60,000 people of about 50 nationalities, most of which are Syrians and Iraqis.
An armed group stormed a shop for selling gold in the market in the first sector of the camp, stealing quantities of gold and amounts of money, a security source from the camp told North Press.
The armed group stole an estimated 1.25 kilos of gold and about 10,000 US dollars, in addition to five cellphones, from the camp, the source said.
Before managing to flee, the armed group fired at the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) in the camp, who were unable to arrest them or even identify them, the source added.
Since mid-April, the camp, south the town of Hawl, east of Hasakah, has witnessed 20 murders against the Syrians and Iraqis residing in the camp.
On Thursday, Asayish found the body of two Iraqi refugees, a man and a woman, killed in two separate incidents in light of increasing number of murders there.
