Closure of Syria-Iraq Yaroubiyah crossing is ‘unfair decision’: Syrian lawyer

MANBIJ, Syria (North Press) – A human rights lawyer from Syria’s Manbij said on Thursday that the continued closure of Yaroubiyah crossing and the restriction of aid entering Syria only through Bab al-Hawa crossing in the northwest of the country is nothing but an “unfair decision” for millions in northeastern Syria.

On Friday, the United Nations Security Council issued a decision to extend the mechanism of the entry of humanitarian aid through Bab al-Hawa border crossing with Turkey into northwest Syria in two stages, each lasting for six months, without adding any other crossings.

A year ago, Yaroubiyah crossing was closed by the UN Security Council decision under Russian-Chinese veto, limiting the entry of aid to Bab al-Hawa on the Turkish-Syrian border.

“The entry of humanitarian and medical aid to the regions of northeast Syria would provide assistance to a large number of needy people and support stability throughout the region,” Ahmed Hajji Mahmoud, a member of the Manbij Bar Association, said.

“All active countries in Syrian affairs are only interested in their political and economic interests, and work to achieve them through many deals and agreements, and the decision to limit the entry of aid to Bab al-Hawa only is the best proof of that,” Mahmoud added.

“We as lawyers and jurists reject the Security Council resolution, which deepens the tragedies and human suffering of five million people in northeast Syria. We call on the Security Council and countries active in Syria to reconsider the decision and issue a decision including the opening of Yaroubiyah crossing,” he added.
