Politicizing aid weakens northeast Syria: politician
RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – On Saturday, a politician from northeast Syria stated that politicizing humanitarian aid to the area is an attempt to defeat the will of a third of the Syrian people.
The UN Security Council issued a resolution on Friday to extend the mechanism of entry of humanitarian aid through the Bab al-Hawa border crossing with Turkey into northwest Syria in two six-month phases, with no additional crossings.
Farhan Issa, a public relations member of the Future Syria Party, said that northeast Syria is suffering from a suffocating siege by the Turkish and the Syrian governments and the UN resolutions that Russia is pressing to pass.
Restricting aid to the Syrian government does not mean that aid will reach the needy in the areas under its control, “but it will be given to government forces and their loyalists,” Issa told North Press.
Issa stated that restricting aid to a party is not in line with “humanitarian cooperation” in dealing with peoples’ crises, which is one of the primary tasks of the United Nations.
The Syrian politician added that there are sides that do not want the project of the Autonomous Administration in northern and eastern Syria to succeed, led by Russia and Turkey, which use their influence to pressure the ongoing closure of the humanitarian crossings, including the Yaroubiyah/Tel Kocher crossing.
A few days ago, the Autonomous Administration called on the international community and the United Nations to open the Yaroubiyah crossing with Iraq, and not link the humanitarian situation to the political interests of some countries.
