Problem of Syrian economy is lack of production: economist

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – An economic expert said on Thursday that the problem of the Syrian economy is not financial related to the budget deficit, but rather the lack or loss of production.

On Wednesday, many social media sites reported news about the imminent increase in the prices of diesel and bread.

The pages reported the rise in the price of diesel to 500 SYP from 190, and a bag of bread to 200 SYP from 100 SYP.

The Damascus-based expert told North Press that raising the price of diesel means affecting production and restricting industrial sectors.

The government, instead of increasing salaries and relieving the population, is raising the prices of basic materials such as bread and diesel, and before that, sugar and rice, “so that the population pays the price for the government’s corruption and mistakes,” he added.

He pointed out that “all the government’s economic policies serve the businessmen and the war-rich people who are close to it, and widen the existing gap in society, through deepening the division of society into a rich class of the minority and a destitute class of the majority, which may lead to upheaval in the future.”
