Closure of Yaroubiyah crossing obstructs arrival of humanitarian aid to Syria: Deir ez-Zor Council
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – An official of the Deir ez-Zor Civil Council said on Thursday that humanitarian aid does not reach the area devastated by the war as it is supposed to with the closure of Yaroubiyah/Tel Kocher crossing, which increases the suffering of IDPs in Autonomous Administration areas.
A year ago, Yaroubiyah crossing was closed by the UN Security Council decision under Russian-Chinese pressure, limiting the entry of aid only to Bab al-Hawa on the Turkish-Syrian border.
The closure of Yaroubiyah crossing had a big impact on the camp residents, said Ahmed al-Ahmed, head of the Relief and Humanitarian Organizations Office in the Civil Council in Deir ez-Zor.
Humanitarian aid does not arrive in the required form, and what organizations provide does not meet the needs of the displaced in Deir ez-Zor, he told North Press.
The official pointed out that closing the crossings is an implementation of the agendas of the Damascus and Ankara governments, under the eyes of Russia, which uses its veto to close the crossing at the expense of the displaced and refugees in northeast Syria.
The countryside of Deir ez-Zor has five shelters for displaced people and refugees housing nearly a thousand families, according to the latest statistics of the relief office and humanitarian organizations in Deir ez-Zor.
The closure of the crossing increases the suffering of the displaced in the Autonomous Administration-held areas, Sheikhmous Ahmed, head of the Office of Displaced Persons and Refugees, told North Press on Wednesday.
Two days ago, the Autonomous Administration appealed to the international community and the United Nations to open the Yaroubiyah crossing and not to link the humanitarian situation with the political interests of some countries.
On July 10, the UN Security Council will meet to discuss a mechanism for extending the entry of humanitarian aid into Syria across the border.
