Seminar held on Syrian constitution in Iraq’s Erbil
ERBIL, Iraq (North Press) – On Sunday, Syrian academics held a seminar on the Syrian constitution in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, after publishing a research that included a series of sessions held in Syria and Kurdistan regarding the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee and its position on the people of northeast Syria.
33 people attended today’s session, including academics, activists, university professors and representatives of the political parties, in the presence of two members of the Constitutional Committee, Fayiq Hawija and Dr. Samira Mubayid.
In the context, Berchav Organization for Democracy, Development and Media held more than 30 seminars attended by the local community figures and the Constitutional Committee members in four Syrian cities in addition to Erbil between February and June.
The organization had earlier issued a research study entitled “The Constitutional Question, Approaches of Sectors of the Population of Northeast Syria,” which included the results of a questionnaire on the opinions and recommendations of the participants in the seminars.
This session “was dedicated to discuss the research paper,” said Farouq Haji Mustafa, the Executive Director of Berchav Organization.
The session focused on three points, “poor Kurdish representation in the Constitutional Committee, the latter’s view of the Kurdish issue, the content of the constitution and supra-constitutional principles that affirm national and religious pluralism in Syria, the guarantee of public freedoms and women’s freedom, the separation of powers and the non-exploitation of the Constitution for hegemony,” Haji Mustafa added.
He also mentioned the need for a special provision for media freedoms.
