International delegation in Iraq condemns Turkish attacks on Kurdistan Region

ERBIL, Iraq (North Press) – On Monday, during its meeting with members of the Iraqi parliament office in the city of Sulaymaniyah in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, the International Delegation of Peace and Freedom condemned Turkish violence within the territory of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

On June 14, the delegation launched the campaign “An international initiative to defend Kurdistan and confront the Turkish occupation.”

Members of the delegation, consisting of 16 different nationalities, met with members of the Iraqi parliament’s office in Sulaymaniyah and met with a number of representatives of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), and the Islamic Party.

In the meeting, the delegation focused on the situation, which it described as “dangerous,” facing the Kurdistan Region due to Turkish interference in the region.

Bakhtiar Shaways, a member of the National Union bloc in Parliament, called during a press conference following the meeting, for a resolution of the Kurdish issue in Turkey “through dialogue and peace,” noting that “this is the principle of the Patriotic Union always and it rejects any intra-Kurdish fighting.”

The representative of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Dana Jaza, also called for supporting all efforts to “stave off war and prevent intra-Kurdish fighting.”

The representative of the Kurdistan Islamic Union bloc, Muthanna Amin, said that “the federal government should take a serious stance towards Turkish interventions and stave off internal strife among Kurds in Iraq.”

Birze Weethoft, a member of the international delegation, said that “Turkish attacks are rejected by the Iraqis as well as by the Kurdistan Region. In fact, these attacks target civilians and not armed forces.”

Weethoft called on the international community and Human Rights Watch to take a position on the Turkish attacks, which she described as “violent.”
