Newroz IDPs camp northeast Syria receives 50 COVID-19 vaccines

DERIK, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, a COVID-19 vaccine campaign for the elderly and those with chronic diseases began in Newroz Camp in the northern countryside of Derik, in the far northeast of Syria. 

The person in charge of the vaccinations in the Health center in Derik, Serbest Hussam, said the vaccination campaign will last for only one day in Newroz Camp.

The number of vaccines is 50, and they will be given to people above 55 years old, and to those who are above 18 but have chronic diseases, he added. 

The vaccines are of the British AstraZeneca type, provided by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The second dose of the vaccine in Newroz Camp will be given to those who were vaccinated today after two months, according the person in charge of the vaccinations in Derik.

Newroz Camp , north of Derik, houses about 300 families with a total of 1,500 people who were displaced from the regions of Afrin, Sere Kaniye and Tel Abyad, according to the camp management.

On Sunday, a coronavirus vaccination campaign with 50 doses for the elderly and those with chronic diseases started in Roj Camp in the countryside of Derik.  

About 757 families, which is about 2,562 people, including Iraqi refugees, displaced Syrians and ISIS families live in Roj Camp, according to the camp management.

On June 9, a COVID-19 vaccine campaign for the elderly and those with chronic diseases began in the public hospital in Derik.

At the end of April, the United Nations announced the arrival of a shipment of about 200,000 doses of coronavirus vaccine to Syria through the COVAX Global Initiative.

At the end of May, the World Health Organization, in coordination with the Health Authority in the Autonomous Administration, began vaccinating medical personnel in the People’s Hospital in Hasakah.

In early June, Jiwan Mustafa, co-chair of the Health Authority in the Autonomous Administration, said that 17,500 doses of the vaccine have reached northeastern Syria, adding that another 6,000 doses will arrive in the next few days, bringing the quantity to 23,000.
