US condemns attacks on Syria’s Afrin

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The US Department of State condemned the attacks on Afrin region, northwest Syria, and called for a ceasefire.

On June 12, the media reported that at least seven people were killed and several others were wounded in two separate artillery attacks on the city center of Afrin.

The first attack targeted a residential area while the second one targeted a hospital shortly thereafter, killing at least six.

“We condemn in the strongest terms yesterday’s attacks on the al-Shifaa Hospital in Afrin, Syria,” said Ned Price, Department spokesperson.

Following the attack, the SDF Commander-in-Chief, Mazloum Abdi, tweeted, “We condemn the attack without reservation. Targeting hospitals is a violation of international law.”

“This barbaric attack took the lives of children, medical staff, and first responders. Civilians and civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, must never be the target of military action,” he added.

“The United States calls for an immediate nation-wide ceasefire and a de-escalation of violence in Syria,” Price noted.
