Kurdistan Region evaluates American delegation’s visit to KRG, Syria’s northeast

ERBIL, KRG, Iraq (North Press) – On Wednesday, Chair of Relations Committee of Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRG) parliament Rebwar Abdurahim Abdullah stressed the importance of visits of American delegations to KRG and Syria’s northeast, and the efforts to unify the Kurdish position and enhance their role in Syria’s future.

A high-ranking American delegation paid a visit to northeast Syria and met with senior officials on Sunday, according to a statement by the US State Department.

This is the first visit they made since Joe Biden has come to power.

During the visit, Acting Assistant Secretary of State Joey Hood stressed support for continuing stability in the region.

On Tuesday, Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander-in-Chief Mazloum Abdi described the meeting that took place with the US high-ranking delegation headed by the Acting Assistant Secretary of State Joey Hood and Director of the National Security Council for Iraq and Syria at the White House Zahra Bell as “constructive.”

“They stressed the ongoing US-led Global Coalition’s presence in the region to defeat Islamic State (ISIS), support of stability in northeast Syria, and strengthening the Autonomous Administration,” he said.

Recent US visits to KRG and Rojava have political and diplomatic importance, on which Hood will form his countries’ polices and strategies in the region, Chair of Relations Committee of KRG told North Press.

On Sunday, KRG President Nechirvan Barzani discussed Iraqi issues, other issues related to the Kurdish issue in Syria, and the unity of the Kurdish position with Hood, in addition to the continuation of support in defeating ISIS.

Abdullah pointed out that during the meeting, they also discussed the Kurdish unified position in Syria, since Rojava (the Kurdish part of Syria) is considered a strategic case for Americans in light of having many international players in the areas in Syria generally.

US plays a major role in the area and wants to unify the political parties including the Kurdish National Council in Syria (ENKS) and Kurdish National Unity parties (PYNK) in order to have more influential role in the Syrian future and the political process as well as to strengthen their role in the security issue, according to him.

He mentioned other issues that Washington concerned about as “the future of north and east Syria, the shape of the Syrian regime, Russian and Iranian interference, and efforts to stabilize the area in favor of the Kurds and US strategy at the same time.”

US delegation discussed these issues with the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Masoud Barzani in order to exchange standpoints and take them into consideration, he added.
