Syria’s Central Bank warns of counterfeit foreign currency in market

DAMASCUS- Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, Syria’s Central Bank issued a press statement warning people about buying foreign currencies from the informal market in light of the prevalence of counterfeit foreign currency.

The statement called on people to buy their foreign currencies from banks and licensed transfer companies.

The Central Bank of Syria realized that there were many counterfeit notes coming from the informal market after many residents visited the bank to pay their debts in foreign currencies, the statement said.

This at a time when the Damascus Chamber of Commerce called on traders to abstain from buying dollars from exchange companies until the end of April, a month after they were allowed to obtain dollars.

Meanwhile, a group of foreign currencies not earmarked for circulation coming from Libya are being dealt with in the informal market after mercenaries who were sent to Libya to fight alongside Turkey returned to Syria.
